The government is losing over Tk 12.08 billion (Tk 1,208.88 crore) revenue per year due to international call termination through illegal Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) system, reports UNB. Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) is currently working on ways to reduce international call termination through illegal VoIP. According to the BTRC, every day some 30 million international calls are entering form abroad. Of the calls, Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (BTTB) terminates some 14 million calls, and the VoIP traders deal the rest 16 million calls. Read more

The telecom watchdog is set to review all the policies practised by the last caretaker government, including its stance on the illegal VoIP (voice over internet protocol). “We are reviewing the policies that were practised by the last caretaker government. Illegal VoIP operations are on the rise, grabbing more than half of the overseas calls business in Bangladesh, due to lack of government control, said industry leaders on Sunday. Telecom infrastructure providers say development of the Tk 3,500-crore international calls sector will remain a far cry until the government takes effective measures, especially against unregulated VSAT use. “The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission has been asked to reinforce its measures against illegal VoIP, but it’s been hindered in the aftermath of the BDR incident,” said Mir Nasir Hossain, president of TIOB (Telecommunication Infrastructure Operators of Bangladesh).

The Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) will intensify its on-going drive against illegal voice over internet protocol (VoIP) call termination, reports BSS. The newly appointed BTRC chairman, Brig Gen (retd) Zia Ahmed at a recent meeting of the Telecom Infrastructure Operators of Bangladesh (TIOB) said BTRC would make all-out efforts to stop illegal VoIP, a press release said here Monday. He said the Commission would also take appropriate steps for smooth functioning of the private sector telecom enterprises operating under the policy of International Long Distance Telecommunications System (ILDTS). The drive to combat illegal use of VoIP (voice over internet protocol) has got a further boost as the country’s mobile phone operators want to cooperate with the telecom watchdog, officials said. This will help Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and the elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) strengthen the anti-VoIP campaign, they said. VoIP is a technology that allows someone to make voice calls using a broadband internet connection instead of any telephone line.

Mobile-phone operators have joined telecoms regulator BTRC and elite anticrime force Rapid Action Battalion in their drive against illegal VoIP business. “Active participation of the mobile-phone operators has strengthened the drive against the illegal VoIP. Thousands of SIM cards being used for the unlawful activities have been blocked already,” the BTRC said in a press statement on Wednesday. The BTRC said due to illicit VoIP activities, government had been counting crores in lost revenues.

Ltd, at E-5, Monicumina Tower, West Agargoan, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar,in the city on charges of illegal VoIP operations. BTRC sealed the Eastern Link’s office for its involvement in illegal call termination services and violating conditions and directives.
