Samsung, which continues to lead the U.S. market in terms of mobile phones provided – high and low end – has recently announced that it sold over 1 million Galaxy S devices to date. That’s not too bad when you consider the Android 2.1 devices being available only on AT&T and T-Mobile so far, with the Captivate and Vibrant smartphones, respectively. On August 31, the Samsung Epic 4G for Sprint will launch with the Fascinate for Verizon not too far behind, rounding off the set of Galaxy S handsets for the major carriers in the U.S.

The Samsung Cetus (I917) is inching closer to launch as we caught the device getting an FCC approval. The smartphone which is slated to be the Korean company’s first Windows Phone 7 device comes with a 3G radio that sings along 850/1900MHz 3G frequency, meaning it’s heading to AT&T and Canada’s Rogers. Of course, we’ve no idea when Samsung and/or AT&T will announce the phone, but we do hope that will happen before the end of the third quarter.

Below we have a video recorded by Windows Phone 24/7 that purportedly showcases the HTC Schubert. Its funky design is mostly metal, but wrapped in rubber at several slanted angles, most likely to increase signal reception. There’s practically no information associated with this device, except a hunch from the leaker that it will be one of the first Windows Phone 7 devices to hit the market.

While we marvel at the slick user interface of Windows Phone 7, we are crestfallen when we discover that one of the most annoying nuances of Windows Mobile has been built into this modern mobile OS. WP7 apparently doesn’t take too well to HTML email images, as you can see from the screenshots above.

Speaking of HTC devices running Windows Phone 7, a little mystery device has been spotted out in the wild. Up until now, we’ve only seen Samsung handsets running about with Microsoft’s latest mobile operating system. Now we’re seeing what one HTC Windows Phone 7 handset will look like. It’s nothing super exciting or groundbreaking since we already know what the chassis requirements are, but it’s nice to see nonetheless. It’s apparently sporting a 3.7 inch SLCD display and is powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, which is definitely plenty of CPU power for an apparently lightweight OS.

The Summer of 2010 will be remembered in years yet to come as the season that saw Android superphones like the T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant – which is the T-Mobile variant of the Samsung Galaxy S, in case you didn’t already know – coming into their own as high-powered competitors to the iPhone. In fact, the T-Mobile Vibrant could have what it takes to convince potential iPhone customers to stick with T-Mobile, rather than defect to AT&T for a chance at iPhone 4 glory. To show you what we mean, we got our hands on a new Samsung Vibrant to do some hands-on tours of the hardware and software bundled with Big Magenta’s Galaxy S variant.

Local search company Yellowbook is teaming up with adaffix, which makes a social call recognition software for smartphones, to launch something really interesting. Before I go into details explaining what the two companies plan to do, let me tell you what adaffix does. Their application works when you take or make a phone call. If you’re calling a friend, adaffix will search for that person on Facebook and display his or her status alongside the phone number on the idle screen. Alternatively, the application can identify the number calling by searching for yellow pages, turning unknown numbers into something more familiar.

LG Optimus One, Chic and Tablet Announced, Packing Android 2.2

LG’s Optimus series announced back in April are getting a few new additions today that will run Android 2.2 (a.k.a. Froyo). The Optimus One will be “with Google”, but aside from that, little info on hard specs or release dates was shared for either device. My guess is these will be staying in Korea and maybe swing by Europe eventually, but on this side of the pond the Ally and Eve seem like LG’s only Android options.

Windows Phone 7 to Offer Try Before You Buy Option for Apps

July 5, 2010 by admin

Phones are all about apps these days, whether you’re hoarding them from the iTunes app store, Android Market, BlackBerry App World or the Palm Catalogue. The only unfortunate thing is that we rarely ever get to try out apps before we buy them. Instead, we’ll scour the web looking for demos, videos and reviews, or we’ll check the reviews that users leave behind on the respective app stores. The problem with that is they’re usually limited to reviews like, “OMG best app evar!!1!” That doesn’t help much.
