Microsoft Kin phones get price drop on Verizon

If you’re dying to get your social networking on the go, you’ll be happy to know that Verizon Wireless is dropping the price of the Microsoft Kin phones. I still don’t think this will be enough to make these handsets a success, though.

The turtle-like Kin One will now cost $29, down from about $50 and the Kin Two will be cut in half to $50. Of course, these are after a new, two-year contract with a data plan (more on that later).

ABI Research: 75% of all WCDMA base stations will be HSPA+ capable by 2015

ABI Research argues that despite the fact that everyone’s all about 4G these days, most carriers around the world are first looking to upgrade their networks to HSPA+ and then eventually switch to LTE. By the end of this year, 20 LTE networks are set to go live, but by the end 2015 only 11% of installed base stations will be LTE.

RIM Buys Mobile Software Developer Viigo

Research In Motion has purchased Viigo, a developer of software that delivers syndicated content to mobile phones, according to a brief note on Viigo’s Web site.

Viigo users open the software client on their phones to find a range of information such as weather reports, stock quotes, sports information, podcasts and news headlines. The software is customizable, so users can choose headlines from preferred news sources and set locations for weather information.

Group Pitches Linux for Free Netbooks From Mobile Carriers

Mobile carriers may start giving away netbooks for free, and Linux-based application stores could help them profit by doing it, the head of a Linux advocacy group told Chinese companies on Monday.

The move by carriers to sell netbooks at a discount and seek revenue from later application downloads is an opportunity for Linux, Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, said at a Beijing forum. He urged Chinese and global companies to consider offering devices and download stores based on Linux.

The government has undertaken a project styled ‘Internet Information Network Expansion (Info- Bahon)’ involving Taka 1.38 billion for bringing all districts under internet facilities at a reasonable cost and easy process, reports BSS. Work for the project, that would be completed within one and a half months, would begin this month. The government is likely to reduce the tax on SIM (Subscribers’ Identification Module) card to below Tk 500 from existing Tk 800 to help the industry recover from its sluggish growth. It might make the announcement in the upcoming budget, on June 11, against the backdrop of repeated plea of the telecom companies to salvage the sector. The growth rate of mobile phone business dropped to 30 per cent in 2008 from 103 per cent in 2006. It was 62 per cent in 2007. Read more

Wintel to set up migrants’ resource centre

A telecom solutions provider is setting up Bangladesh’s first migrants’ resource centre aiming to cater to the needs of millions of overseas job-seekers, the head of Wintel Limited said Tuesday. Faisal Alim, managing director, said the country’s largest value-added service provider for the telecom industry is now awaiting approval from the telecom regulator BTRC for a “premium” code to operate the centre. “Our aim is to open the centre early next month. We’re just waiting for the approval for a four-digit code to run it,” Mr Alim said. Read more
