Mobile browsers need to be small and light enough to run quickly on a mobile device with limited resources. And, for many smartphone platforms, the Webkit rendering engine does the job quite well. qTweeter lets users update Twitter and Facebook from anywhere on the iPhone
Here’s a neat application, unfortunately developed for jailbroken iPhones and iPod Touches, only. It’s called qTweeter and it allows users to update their Facebook and/or Twitter status from anywhere on the screen. In order to do so, all a user has to do is slide their finger down from the status area. Developed by Efiko Software — the company which is behind such popular apps as iPhoneRingToneMaker and DialByPhoto — the application is, as described above, super easy to use. Read more
MySpace sees 450% growth in mobile users!
Mention any sort of double-digit growth figures and you’ll get passing approval. Talk about growth figures at or near triple-digits and you’ll be the talk of the town. MySpace, the behemoth social network that started it all, has just announced that 2008 saw 450% growth in mobile usage! Champagne will be flowing tonight. MySpace says that the flood of mobile users has generated some 7 billion mobile page views in 2008.
BlackBerry Desktop Manager Surfaces on Web
This past week we saw unofficial updates for the BlackBerry Bold and Curve 8900 to bring the devices up to OS 5.0… So it comes as no surprise that BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Desktop Manager 5.0 has also now surfaced on the web. Mobile phones most searched online, Apple iPhone leads the pack
Data mining is a powerful tool. When applied to web traffic data, interesting trends start to emerge. And the latest trend seems to be cellphones. Go figure. Hitwise has come out with the latest web search trends that shows mobile phones as the most searched for consumer electronics across the web. By looking at data from web searches for consumer electronics in the most recent week ending February 14, web traffic analysts at Hitwise have determined that 29.4% of all online searches for consumer electronics were searches for mobile phones, making cellphones the most popular type of web search. BBC revamps its Mobile site
The BBC has revised it’s Mobile site look & feel, and also done something else which is probably going to be appreciated by regular visitors – it now allows people to customise their homepage. Having had a quick browse (you can do that here), the site feel more like the “Web”site now – funny that – with a consistent browsing experience, that is apparently dynamically optimised for each device. Mobile ebook sharing community goes iPhone
Popular mobile ebook sharing community, Wattpad, teamed up with Five Mobile to bring its service to the iPhone/iPod Touch users. As a result, a dedicated Wattpad application along with an extensive library of user-generated and public domain ebooks, is now available as a free download through Apple AppStore. Those not familiar should know that Wattpad is a YouTube-like community for reading and sharing ebooks on mobile devices that provides users with access to hundreds of thousands of novels, short stories, fan fiction, essays, jokes and more. iPhone Gets New Browser Options
New Web browsers for the iPhone started appearing in Apple’s App Store, contrary to the company’s previous policy of denying applications that duplicate functionality of its own software. Four new Web browser implementations became available over the last day in the App store. (Check out our hands-on assessment here). Still, other popular browsers are not expected to follow suit.
