Skype Arrives for iPhone… BlackBerry Version Coming Soon

As expected, Skype has unveiled their iPhone and BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) apps at CTIA Wireless yesterday (Tuesday). The app is available right now for free via the App Store for US iPhone/AT&T (NYSE: T) subscribers (sorry Canada… not sure about the UK and other parts of the world, but I assume Skype is not available in other parts of the world either… Bummer!). The App Store seems to have a habit of launching new and highly anticipated apps within the US only. A bit of a pet peeve of mine (being in Canada and all). Rest assured that Skype will be coming to a more international audience in the near future. Read more

I’m an avid golfer. In the spring, summer and fall I can often be found on the course playing a quick 9 or full 18 to take the edge off a solid day of work. With golf on the brain, I always get pumped come April… why?… Because my very favorite golf tournament of the year takes place, the Masters! This year it’s running April 6-12 in beautiful Augusta, Georgia (of course). In my anticipation of this years’ tourny, and with a thirst for more knowledge regarding the 2009 event, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Masters will very shortly have its very own iPhone app! Google is apparently hell-bent on rocking the mobile industry with its various mobile services. Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Voice, recently announced as the new face of GrandCentral, has the potential to rethink the way mobile subscribers use their various phone numbers. And, Google’s looking to make the transition to Google Voice even easier – Google will be allowing users to port their mobile number to Google Voice! Rather than handing out yet another phone number for its users to remember and distribute, Google’s number-porting support will allow for a seamless transition to Google Voice. Read more

Microsoft really is working hard to give their touch-optimized Windows Mobile 6.5 update everything it needs to capture a good chunk of the smartphone market. In fact, Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) is even working to ensure that it ditches design elements that aren’t expected to be received well by the public. In that vein, Microsoft is reportedly cutting the honeycomb application launcher from the Windows Mobile 6.5 homescreen. Read more

While there are literally a hundred different new features packed into the iPhone 3.0 OS that’s due to hit market in a few months’ time, the discovery of a new iPhone-tracking feature comes as a genuine surprise. iPhone developers have apparently been teasing apart the developer release of the iPhone OS 3.0 beta, and have uncovered the “Find My iPhone” feature lurking within. Perhaps, given that the iPhone can already track your location via cell-tower triangulation or GPS, it should come as a logical next step to offer location-tracking in the event of loss or theft. It looks like Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)’s next major update to the Windows Mobile platform will be a drastic departure from the Windows Mobile we all know and, um, love. Windows Mobile 6.5 does include some touch-optimized features, but it’s far from being the mobile platform that will capture the attention of consumers being offered slick touch-optimized interfaces like the iPhone OS, Android OS, and WebOS. It’s not often that anyone accuses Google (NSDQ: GOOG) of launching a half-baked idea, but the Google Android Dev Phone 1 has certainly become a sticking point in Google’s handling of the Android Market and paid Android applications. A new firmware update for the Android Dev Phone 1 finally gives users access to premium Android applications in the Android Market.
