Though not as dramatic as the moon landing that took place 40 years ago Monday, a phone call over a satellite launched earlier this month was the first for a system that may dramatically expand mobile voice and data coverage in the U.S. and Canada.

New iPhone 3GS Bootrom NOT Jailbreak-Proof! With One Catch…

When Apple released the new iPhone 3GS with an updated bootrom, many reports claimed it rendered the handset “unhackable” or “jailbreak-proof.” I maintained such reports were overdramatic and it was only a matter of time before a new exploit was discovered. While the Dev-Team is undoubtedly working hard in finding a new exploit for the 3GS bootrom, in the meantime, Dev-Team member Eric McDonald addressed sensationalized reports in a Wired interview released yesterday.
The Signal #38: Very, Very British and Invisble Shield for iPhone 3G Giveaway

Our illustrious UK author, Ben Robinson, joins us from IntoMobile Towers this episode!
The Signal grows again, now that we’ve got four writers linking up for this week’s episode. This week’s top news is a bit of a mish-mash. The N900 rocks the roost for top story, and Stefan gives us his expert take on Maemo and the new Nokia (NYSE: NOK) handset that straddles MID and smartphone categories nicely. Ben tells us about CoPilot Live, a navigation app for iPhone he’s been trying out, Will gives us the run-down on Google (NSDQ: GOOG)’s crowdsourcing for traffic data, and I talk about the huge accessories market and how surprising (or not) the figures are.

iPhone vulnerable to hacker attacks – researchers

SECURITY experts have uncovered flaws in Apple’s iPhone that hackers can exploit to take control of the popular device, using the tactic for identity theft and other crimes.
Users need to be warned that their iPhones are not entirely secure and Apple should try to repair the vulnerability as soon as possible, they said at the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas, one of the world’s top forums for exchanging information on computer security threats.
AT&T Cuts Refurbished iPhone 3G (8GB) to $49

AT&T used Twitter last Friday evening to announce that a refurbished iPhone 3G–specifically, the black 8GB model–can now be picked up for just $49, while supplies last. That’s half the price of an unopened 8GB model. A refurbished 16GB iPhone 3G (black or white) costs $99.
My iPhone 3GS – the woes continue…

I’ve not had a very good run with my iPhone 3GS – first of all, I found the same rattle that Will found, and now I’ve got screen issues!
What exactly? Well, follow my instructions below and let’s see if you have the same:

Citizen Connect to allow iPhone-ownin’ citizens of Boston to quickly file civic complaints

City of Boston is going iPhone with a dedicated application called Citizen Connect. The idea here is to allow citizens to quickly file civic complaints by snapping a photo of neighbourhood problems and email them directly to City Hall. Using the built-in GPS receiver, the photo is geotagged making sure the local government knows exactly where problem occurred. Every complaint gets a tracking number, allowing citizens to follow city officials’ progress in addressing the issue.
iPhone 3GS Inventory Shrinks, But Tool Helps You Find One

The long lines of iPhone buyers may be gone, but Apple’s iPhone availability tool has returned as iPhone 3GS stocks dwindle across the United States. The online widget acts as a stock checker to see which iPhone 3GS models your local Apple Stores have on hand. Just go to Apple’s Website, select your state, and a grid pops up showing which iPhone 3GS models are available and where. If you see a green dot under the model you want you’re in luck, but a red square means no go for now.
