![Microsoft bans GPLv3 apps from Windows Phone Marketplace [Open source software is evil]](http://www.phone.com.bd/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/linux.jpg)
Of all the nerd fights that take place on the internet, Microsoft
versus the open source community is the battle that has caused more trollish comments and lengthy prose to be posted than anything even remotely similar. Forget Android versus iOS, Microsoft versus Linux is where blood boils. Understandably so when you look at how Microsoft makes money, by writing and selling software, whereas the “freetards”, as Fake Steve Jobs likes to call them, want to sell you professional services and management while keeping the apps themselves free for everyone to tinker with. This hasn’t stopped Microsoft from tipping their toe into the sea of quality free software out there, but they’re not going to change business models anytime soon. The same mindset is now being used to push free open source software out of the Windows Phone Marketplace, but not in the way most imagined. Rather than write a headline about how all open source software (OSS) is banned, the real story is a bit more complicated than that.

Remember that “Sony Ericsson suing Clearwire for having a very similar logo” story? While the fight may still not be over, the first round definitely goes to Clearwire. Federal court found “insufficient evidence of likelihood of confusion and no irreparable harm,” denying a motion for a preliminary injunction. That doesn’t mean the buck necessarily stops here, but it will be much harder for the Swedish-Japanese lawyers to take much further.

Chief Research and Strategy Officer, Craig Mundie, showcased some new technology during a recent TechForum event for news media. His presentation demonstrated the use of a Windows Phone handset, supposedly the HTC HD7, to control the user interface of a computer. If you look beyond the UI beyond being presented, the phone is serving as to control as well as share data with the computer. This demonstration is only the tip of the iceberg of what may be possible when the computer becomes the natural extension of the phone and it is this type of synergy that Microsoft has been talking up since it introduced WP7 in 2010.
