Apple ditching iPhone embedded SIM plans?

Well, it looks like Apple has nixed its plans to build the next iPhone with embedded SIM cards after the carriers cried out, “Bloody murder,” according to reports.

As you may know, Apple was reportedly working with Gemalto for the next generation iPhone to have integrated SIM cards which could be flashed to work on different carriers. The upshot of this for Apple is that it could take control of the retail experience with many of its own retail stores.

Netflix debuts no-DVD, streaming-only plan for $7.99 in the US

Netflix announced a major change to its subscription plans that should bring joy and some savings to its mobile customers. Starting today in the U.S., Netflix is now offering a non-DVD, streaming-only plan for $7.99 per month. This plan is compatible with supported streaming devices like Roku, Windows and Mac computers, and smartphones running iOS and Windows Phone. It also raised prices on it current DVD and streaming plans by $1 or $2 dollars.

Cricket launches TXTM8 3G; Heavy texters on a budget rejoice!

As expected, Cricket Wireless has started selling the successor to the original TXTM8 phone. The new device is called TXTM8 3G (aka TXTM8 II), implying it supports the carrier’s CDMA-based 3G network. Cricket emphasized it’s the first 3G phone to cost less than $100 sans any contracts signed.

Palm Pre 2 to launch in the UK on November 15th without carrier support

Palm is launching its Pre 2 handset in the UK starting on November 15th but the handset will not land on the shelves of any major wireless carrier in the UK. According to Pocket-Lint, a quick perusal of wireless carriers reveals that none of the four major wireless carriers in the UK have plans to carry the handset.

Sony Ericsson X7 and X7 Mini to bring Windows Phone 7 in 4.3 inch and 3.5 inch flavors in Q1 2011?

Recently a YouTube video was uploaded showing what is supposedly Sony Ericsson’s X7 and X7 Mini smartphones, both running Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system. If the information is to be believed, then the X7 will sport a 4.3 inch screen, be powered by a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm MSM8260 processor, have an 8.1 megapixel camera that can record 720p video, and even support HDMI, which is something that as far as we knew is not supported by the OS. Then there’s the X7 Mini, which uses the older 1 GHz Qualcomm QSD8250 processor found in such devices such as the Google Nexus One and a wide variety of Android devices currently on the market, has a 10.1 megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom and a full blown Xenon flash. It too does video in 720p.
