With Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) barreling down the product pipeline to meet their Windows Phone 7 launch window, set for later this year, it’s not too surprising to see the first WP7 ROM leak out to the web. We’ve already had plenty of time to play with Microsoft’s completely revamped mobile operating system, and that takes a bit of the bite out of this ROM leak. But, we do learn some juicy info. Hidden in the ROM is a mention of what is likely to be the first Windows Phone 7 smartphone, made by none other than HTC. It’s called the HTC “Mondrian” and it’s sort of a tribute to the WP7 Metro UI.
Sprint launches the BlackBerry Bold 9650 for $200

We knew the Sprint (NYSE: S) BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Bold 9650 was headed to the US as the first CDMA Bold handset from RIM, but we didn’t think they’d go live with the new smartphone on a Sunday. Nevertheless, Sprint has just made their first BlackBerry Bold for the expected price of $199.99 when purchased with a new 2-year contract from Sprint. The new push emailing smartphone rocks more RAM – the tune of 512MB – than the BlackBerry Bold 9700 but boasts the same QWERTY keyboard that has yet to find a match amongst rival smartphones.

Google’s Nexus One Web Store Going Out of Business

Google’s groundbreaking model for selling Android phones from a single Web site is about to become history.
Google has just announced it’s pulling the plug on its Nexus One Android Web store. The Nexus One Web store, launched in conjunction with the Nexus One device in January, was designed to give users a one-stop virtual shop to pick up the latest and greatest Android phones. It was meant to mark the start of a new kind of distribution model — one where you base your decisions on devices rather than on carriers.

Following on the myriad gold, platinum, and diamond-clad iPhones that have managed to disgust anyone with even a modicum of good taste and common sense, there’s a new gold-and-diamond iPad on the market. Supposed “designer” Stuart Hughes is now selling a 64GB iPad 3G + WiFi that has had its entire aluminum unibody casing replaced with 22ct gold. And, in order to satisfy the obscene tastes of the too-rich-for-their-own-good set, Hughes has encrusted the Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) logo on the iPad’s backside with 53 flawless diamonds.

Are you still using that high-powered smartphone in your pocket more for making voice calls than for using data services like surfing the web, checking email, or keeping up with Facebook. With all the techno-wizardry that modern mobile phones allow, if you’re still relying on your handset to actually talk to other people, you’re likely already falling behind the times. The New York Times today posted an anecdote-rich but hard data-poor story today, claiming that cellphone users are relying on their wireless devices more for alternative communications and less for voice-to-voice convos, and we tend to agree.

We’ve been talking up the Sprint (NYSE: S) HTC EVO 4G ever since we first got to play with the hardware at CTIA Las Vegas earlier this year. And, rightly so – the EVO 4G is one bad mamma-jamma. In fact, it’s quite possibly the hands-down best Android phone of 2010. That’s saying a lot. But, there is one thing that could hold the Sprint EVO 4G back from becoming the outright blockbuster smartphone of the year, and it’s potentially Sprint’s fault. Sprint has just confirmed to us that the upcoming Android smartphone will require that all customers pay a $10 add-on fee for “4G data.” Sounds about right, right? Well, what if we told you that the fee is mandatory, even if you’re not in a 4G market.
