Mobile carriers may start giving away netbooks for free, and Linux-based application stores could help them profit by doing it, the head of a Linux advocacy group told Chinese companies on Monday.
The move by carriers to sell netbooks at a discount and seek revenue from later application downloads is an opportunity for Linux, Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, said at a Beijing forum. He urged Chinese and global companies to consider offering devices and download stores based on Linux.

The long lines of iPhone buyers may be gone, but Apple’s iPhone availability tool has returned as iPhone 3GS stocks dwindle across the United States. The online widget acts as a stock checker to see which iPhone 3GS models your local Apple Stores have on hand. Just go to Apple’s Website, select your state, and a grid pops up showing which iPhone 3GS models are available and where. If you see a green dot under the model you want you’re in luck, but a red square means no go for now.

Comcast is getting into the wireless broadband business by bundling Clearwire’s 4G wireless service with its existing broadband products.
The largest cable operator in the U.S. will launch the new service in Portland, Ore. And it will expand the service to other Comcast cities later in the year, including Atlanta, Chicago, and Philadelphia.
