The latest rumblings from Redmond point to TellMe bringing voice commands to Windows Mobile 6.5. Unlike the BlackBerry lineup and Sprint Instinct and Instinct S30’s more limited application-based speech recognition, Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Mobile 6.5 OS will feature integrated system-wide voice controls, courtesy of Microsoft’s TellMe subsidiary. Social location widget Rocket wins Nokia N97 widget competition
Remember the Nokia N97 widget competition, which the Finnish giant launched in December of last year? The winner has been announced during the recently ended Nokia Developer Summit in Monaco. It’s called Rocket and it’s a social location (SoLo) widget developed by David Emmanuel Castro Guerrero from Mexico. As an award, Guerrero went home with the brand new Nokia N97 pre-loaded with his own widget on the home screen. Also as part of the deal, Rocket will have prime status on the homepage of the upcoming Ovi Store, ensuring tons of people will be able to grab his creation. Read more
BanglaLion pays WiMax acquisition fee
BanglaLion Communication, a WiMax licensee, said it has paid the due license acquisition fee to the telecom watchdog, ensuring the company’s plan to launch the first ever-high speed broadband internet service in Bangladesh. “We paid the dues within the deadline that expired on March 31,” Parvez Ahmed Shamim, BanglaLion’s WiMax project consultant, said yesterday. BanglaLion’s payment in full to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has ensured two private sector WiMax licensees in the country. Augere Wireless Broadband Bangladesh Ltd is the other WiMax licence holder that cleared its payment in due time. Read more
Scrap IPO condition for mobile phone operators
The prime bourse has proposed that the National Board of Revenue (NBR) scrap the regulation that binds a mobile phone operator to float at least 10 percent shares of its paid up capital through initial public offering to benefit from corporate tax rebate facility. Presently, the rate of corporate tax for mobile phone operators is 45 percent, which will come down to 35 percent, provided the company goes public. Dhaka Stock Exchange made the plea during a pre-budget meeting with the NBR yesterday morning. Read more

Leading operators of telecom infrastructure in the country Sunday came down heavily on the illegal VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) operators, whom they blamed for the loss of government revenue worth Tk 5.0 billion (500 crore) each year. MySpace, the behemoth social network that started it all, has just announced that 2008 saw 450% growth in mobile usage! Champagne will be flowing tonight. Number of mobile subscribers to reach ‘181m by ‘13′
The number of the country’s mobile subscribers is well on track to reach 181 million with a penetration rate of over 120 per cent by the year 2013, a leading global business publication predicted recently. The London-based Business Monitor International (BMI) in its December 2008 issue of country reports on “Telecommunications 2009-13″ for 17 Asian markets including Bangladesh expected that despite the downward impact of mobile registration introduced by the government, the subscriber growth is likely to remain strong. South Korea’s leading mobile operator, KTF, announced a new kind of USIM (Universal Subscriber Identity Module) chips/cards that can have up to a gigabyte of internal memory. Users who opt to grab one of these can have all their contacts and some mobile content stored on a SIM card, only to transfer it easier to the next phone they buy. As a result, PC suite software can become obsolete for some users — switching a SIM card is all it takes to preserve your contacts and other information stored on a mobile phone. Read more
