The Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) is going to introduce international mobile equipment identification (IMEI) system in the country by December to check raising trend of stealing and snatching mobile phone sets, BTRC Chairman Major General Manzurul Alam said. ”We are going to introduce the IMEI system – very effective in different European countries – with the aim of preventing the trend of stealing of hijacking mobile phone ” said Major General Manzurul Alam.
He hoped, if the system is introduced, thieves and snatchers will not be able to use the theft or snatched sets.

The BTRC chairman also said 20 British companies have shown interest in setting up call centers in the country. Of them, six companies have already signed agreements in this regard. ”Our goal is to get modern technology at a cheaper rate”, he said. Referring to the lowest mobile phone call tariff in the country, he said, ”We have discussed with the NBR chairman to reduce the tax on SIM cards”, adding ”We have also discussed with other countries to cut roaming call tariff.”
Mr Alam said the commission has a plan to give 3G licences in the first part of next year. He expressed hope that with the public-private sector initiatives the country’s telecom sector will reach a certain stage within next three years.
